The Holiday Season Around the World (Segment 1)

The Church of the Nativity in Manger Square, Bethlehem, Palestine // IMEU

As homes are filled with the smell fresh baked sugar cookies, people crowded in the stores buying gifts, and streets are brightened with colorful lights In the spirit of the holidays, children all over the world are excited to celebrate one of the most festive holidays of the year: Christmas

Christmas being celebrated in many countries all over the world means that there is a wide variety of traditions.

In Singapore, although Christianity is not the dominant religion of the country, it is widely recognized. There are fairy lights everywhere in the city, especially in shopping malls. There are also stunning light decorations and fun concerts.

In Australia, you can expect children spending time with their family on the beach enjoying nice picnics facilitated by churches and listening to a multitude of carols under the bright sun and in the warm weather.

In Brazil, a nativity scene is displayed in front of churches as ‘Papai Noel’ travels from Greenland to Brazil and distributes gifts to the children. Christmas trees brighten up the area and they end it off with fireworks.

In South Africa, families come together at the ‘Braai,’ a South African version of a Barbeque. Typically artificial Christmas trees are decorated, but people go to the Christmas mass where there are natural Christmas trees.

Finally, in the United States, children sip on their hot chocolate after ice-skating and making snow angels in the snow on a cold winter day. They look forward to the colorful light installation in the city and opening their gifts, as well as a nice shared meal.

Christmas is a time for family and friends to come together and enjoy the weather, hot or cold, together over a nice meal, gift-giving, or enjoying the vibrant, sparkling lights.
